Giving FAQ

Who am I giving to and what can I support?

You’re giving a tax-deductible amount to The Catholic Foundation to benefit a fund where you advise grants to support your causes.  Grants you recommend may include the Diocese’s Appeal, your parish offertory or other parish support, causes in the diocese or anywhere in the laws of the United States, Catholic and non-Catholic.

Do my allocations have to stay within the Diocese of Columbus?

No. Your fund can be created to support causes around the country and often are put in place to support a parish or school from childhood in a different part of the country.

Can I contribute to a secular organization?

Through your Foundation fund you can give to any 501(c)(3) organization that does not conflict with Catholic teaching. This can be an animal shelter, your university, a homeless shelter, or the symphony.

Is The Catholic Foundation independent from the Diocese of Columbus?

Yes. All authority of the Foundation is vested in and exercised by our Board of Trustees.

Are investments aligned with Catholic values?

Yes. Our portfolios follow the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops investment policies. We also carefully screen all charitable organizations that we support to make sure they follow Catholic teaching.

Is there a cost to work with the Foundation?

There are no fees associated with creating a fund with the Foundation, nor any transaction fees for granting. The only fee is an administrative fee on endowed and designated funds of 0.85% or eighty-five basis points and 0.95% or ninety-five basis points on donor advised funds.

As a reference, the monthly charge to a $100,000 endowment fund will be around $71. The monthly charge to a $10,000 donor advised fund will be around $8.

Can other people contribute to my TCF giving accounts?

Yes. Once a fund is created, anyone can add to that fund in any dollar amount – even as little as $5! Gifts to a loved one’s account can make a great birthday or anniversary gift!

Can I include my children with my fund?

Absolutely! Depending on the type of fund you create, children can serve as Advisors with you on your fund, or even take over your fund in the future creating a true family legacy of giving.

I already have a charitable fund with another financial institution (Fidelity, Charles Schwab). Why would I use The Catholic Foundation?

While the big financial institutions offer the same giving vehicles as the Foundation, only The Catholic Foundation can ensure that your gifts are invested in accordance to our faith, and funds granted out will not support organizations that conflict with Catholic teachings. Plus, who doesn’t love personalized customer support from professionals who personally know you and your individual situation?

Can I support my offertory and/or The Appeal giving through the Foundation?

Absolutely. You can conveniently set a schedule for recurring contributions that are monthly, quarterly, biannually, or annually. This can include gifts to The Appeal, an annual fund at your alma mater, or your parish offertory.

What types of assets can I contribute to the Foundation?

The Foundation accepts cash, credit card, stock/securities, insurance policies, personal property, real estate, and much more.
